Rice genome news concerns some California rice growers (April 10, 2002 – CropChoice news) – Though newswires have been buzzing with stories about the decoding of the rice genome, which could be a boon to developers of transgenic varieties, rice farmers in the Sacramento Valley of California are wary of the development, according to a story in the April 6 edition of the Sacrament Bee newspaper.
They worry that consumers would reject any genetically modified rice, were farmers to commercially plant it; such rice is not yet a reality.
The California rice crop earns $500 million a year. Nearly a quarter of the state's rice exports go to Japan, where consumers have expressed opposition to genetically modified foods.
