South African farmers plant GM soybeans, corn

(Jan. 4, 2002 – CropChoice news) – In addition to the Roundup Ready soybeans that they finished planting last year, South African farmers are now sowing the world’s first commercial transgenic white corn.

Monsanto expects to sell enough white corn seed to plant about 600 hectares this season, according to the company. Farmers will plant white corn on about 1,596,005 hectares, according to government estimates.
