Dutch government ordered to allow patenting of transgenic products

(Oct. 23, 2001 – CropChoice news) – The European Court of Justice recently ordered the Dutch government to allow biotechnology companies to apply for patents for transgenic products; the court ruled that existing European regulations protect human dignity and prohibit the patenting of human body parts.

The Netherlands, Italy, and Norway, countries heretofore have banned the patenting of living cells for ethical reasons.
