WHO, FAO to study safety of GMOs

(March 12, 2002 -- CropChoice news) -- A 226-member task force from the World Health, and Food and Agriculture organizations last Friday in Japan agreed on guidelines to judge the safety and nutritional value of transgenic foods.

Members of the task force agreed that authorities must assess all genetically modified foods before commercialization, ensure their traceability and remove them from the market if and when they identify risks.

The task force will continue to develop guidelines for assessing the risks of GM foods until March 2003, when it will submit the final guidelines to the Codex Alimentarius Commission.
