A conflict between human rights and biotech industry rights?

(June 21, 2001 CropChoice news) Human rights and the rights of the biotechnology industry are in conflict when it comes to the development of transgenic crops. Jakkrit Kuanpoth, a law lecturer at the Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University in Thailand, said that these crops could be harmful to environmental health, which is a human right.

Meanwhile, the World Trade Organization is proposing a database to contain the traditional uses of plants and animals worldwide. Officials at the Organization hope that such a database, to be operated by the World Intellectual Property Rights Organization, would help resolve disputes over what varieties and species can be patented.
