Monsanto sticks with RR wheat strategy

(Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002 -- CropChoice news) -- Monsanto has no plans to alter its strategy for the introduction of Roundup Ready wheat, according to a Food Chemical News interview of company spokeswoman Trish Jordan.

She was trying to set the record straight following media stories intimating a Monsanto effort to mollify criticism of its wheat genetically engineered to resist the herbicide Roundup by pushing back the 2005 date for introduction and by integrating characteristics that would appeal to bakers and consumers. But the company had always intended to include such traits, Jordan said. The company still plans to present regulators in Japan, the United States and Canada with formal applications this summer for approval of Roundup Ready wheat. The story said nothing about a target date for commercialization.
