EU signs crop diversity treaty (June 7, 2002 – CropChoice news) – The European Union yesterday signed the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources, bringing to 26 the number of countries that have signed the treaty designed to protect worldwide crop diversity. It aims to ensure the preservation of plant resources and their availability for research and breeding. Officials from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization anticipate that more countries will sign the treaties at next week’s World Food Conference in Rome. So far, only Eritrea, Egypt, Jordan and Guinea have ratified it, which leaves only 36 more to go. Source: Reuters
