Soybeans close sharply lower on CBOT

(Aug. 16, 2001 -- CropChoice news) -- Soybean futures closed sharply lower on the Chicago Board of Trade, possibly due in part to a report from Greenpeace about missing DNA in Monsanto's transgenic Roundup Ready soybeans.

Traders expressed concern that the Greenpeace report could make it into major newspapers and network news programs, which might cause export problems for U.S. soybeans.

November soybeans closed down 13 cents at $5.00 per bushel, December soyoil ended down 34 points at 18.98 cents per pound, and December soymeal settled down $3.40 at $166.10 per short ton.
