UN reports that modified crop trials not benefiting developing world

(April 17, 2002 – CropChoice news) -- The United Nations University Institute for New Technologies (UNU/INTECH) officials said yesterday that trials of genetically modified crop trials have failed to help developing countries because the testing focuses on developing herbicide tolerance and pest resistance rather than improving yield. They noted that only a quarter of field tests in the United States and 12.5 percent of the field tests conducted in the European Union relate directly to crop yield.
