Will Brazil's ban on transgenic crops remain in place? (April 25, 2001 -- Cropchoice news) -- Consumer and environmental groups have used the courts to hold off the Brazilian government's plans to legalize the cultivation of transgenic soy. European markets count on Brazil for a steady supply of non-transgenic soy and corn.
But their fortunes could change at the end of the month. That's when a federal judge will hear the biotechnology industry's appeal of a ruling that insufficient testing was done to guarantee that transgenic crops would not harm consumers or the environment.
