Talk of new GMO approvals begins in Europe

(Oct. 16, 2001 – CropChoice news) – The European Commission and the governments of EU member states reportedly began discussions on moving ahead with approvals of new transgenic crops; the approval process had been stopped since 1998. A spokeswoman told Reuters that environment ministers would discuss further this issue at the end of the month in Luxembourg.

France and five other member states want the full EU membership to adopt the Commission’s tight labeling and traceability proposal before taking any action on approving any new biotech crops.
