Roughrider Genetics

(Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002 -- CropChoice news) -- North Dakota State University is launching Roughrider Genetics, a program to promote publicly held crop varieties that have, under license, been modifed to include patented genes owned by private companies.

The first of the Roughrider Genetics varieties is RG200RR. In the name, RG stands for Roughrider Genetics and the first "2" is the year released. The "00" stands for the industry 0.0 maturity rating, which means a very early maturity rating for northern-grown beans. The RR stands for Roundup Ready, meaning it is engineered to be immune to Monsanto's Roundup weedkiller. The foundation has an agreement with Monsanto for commercial products.
