Australian report urges farmers to plant biotech

(Wenesday, Jan. 1, 2003 -- CropChoice news) --Daily Telegraph: A research paper from the Productivity Commission concluded that that Australian farmers must produce more genetically modified crops or lose out in global markets, and that if Australia did not boost GM technology then markets for oilseeds and non-wheat grains were likely to "stagnate," stating, "The results imply that over the longer term, the expansion of GM technology into non-wheat grains and oilseed sectors could have significant impacts on Australia's trade position."

Concerns remain in Australia over the potential adverse effects including health risks, harm to the environment and ethical implications.

The Productivity Commission study shows consumer resistance to GM crops ensures a larger market for non-GM varieties.
