USDA asks Monsanto for more data on biotech wheat

(Tuesday, July 15, 2003 -- CropChoice news) -- Reuters, 07/14/03 via Agnet: WASHINGTON - The U.S. Agriculture Department was cited as saying on Monday it had asked Monsanto Co. to provide additional information on its genetically modified wheat before the government completes its regulatory review.

Jim Rogers, spokesman for USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, was cited as saying the USDA on July 8 asked Monsanto, based in St. Louis, to provide answers to a "list of questions" concerning its wheat biotech application, but he would not elaborate, except to say that the USDA's request for more information was "quite common."

The USDA will continue to review Monsanto's application once the additional data is provided, Rogers said.

A Monsanto spokeswoman said the company had received USDA's questions and would quickly submit the requested information.
