Brazil unlikely to allow sale of Roundup Ready soybeans (Aug. 6, 2001 – CropChoice news) – The Brazilian agricultural minister may think he can give the nod for the sale and planting of transgenic soybeans, but that’s not the case. The injunction preventing sales of Monsanto’s Roundup Ready soybeans still stands, which is what the Association of Federal Judges in Brazil told the minister last week. Before he or anyone else legally can lift the injunction, the government must first assess the environmental impacts of the transgenic beans, which it won’t complete until at least 2002.
Therefore, farmers in the South American agriculture powerhouse again will grow only conventional soybeans next season, which begins in September.
