Brazilian beans arrive in China

(Tuesday, April 15, 2003 -- CropChoice news) -- The soybeans China ordered from Brazil arrived at the Qingdao port in the province of Shandong today. The beans will be unloaded once they receive a permit taking them out of quarantine in one or two days, the buyer, Shandong Hualiang Cereals & OOils Ltd told OsterDow Jones news service.

China requires that soybean exporters apply for GMO safety certificates from the Ministry of Agriculture. Before being unloaded, they also must get labeling and quarantine permits from the Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.

The United States and Brazil are the first and second largest soybean suppliers to China. Last year, China purchased 3.9 million tons of soybeans from Brazil.

China's Brazilian soybean imports in April likely will be about 450,000- 550,000 tons, according to the China National Grain & Oils Information Center. U.S. and Brazilian bean imports this month: 1.60 million to 1.90 million tons.

China imported a total of 2.02 million tons of soybeans in January and February, which is a 91 percent increase on the year, according to OsterDow Jones on Chinese customs data. The United States accounted for 90 percent of that and Brazil 9.5 percent. March soybean import estimates: 2.20 million to 2.3 million tons.
