Swiss highest court blocks biotech crop field trial
(Friday, March 14, 2003 -- CropChoice news) -- Switzerland's highest court has blocked a planned field trial of bioengineered wheat. The decision comes after a stop-and-go for the field trials (see On the Plate, Jan. 10, 2003). The researchers were initially denied permission by the Swiss environmental ministry last year, which than later reversed its decision to allow the tests to start this year. However, after an appeal the court has now blocked the trials. The court argued that the ministry had failed to take into account the arguments of the opponents of the open-air tests.
