House passes farm bill, Senate to debate further (May 3, 2002 – CropChoice news) – The House yesterday passed a six-year, $180 billion farm bill. Most of the money would subsidize large-scale corn and cotton growers.
The Senate, however, did not follow the lead of the House. Instead, several of its members teamed up with environmentalists in an unsuccessful effort to further limit payments to big farmers. Senators will take up the debate again next week.
A number of U.S. trading partners, including the European Union, Canada and Australia, have vowed to fight the subsidies in the World Trade Organization on grounds that they interfere with free trade.
