Death to the grim reaper (2/24/2002)
Think of our current system as an elderly fridge, designed in the 1950s as the latest
in cutting edge technology. Its sheen and promise has worn off. The rubber trim on
the door hasn't coped with daily wear and tear. A suspicious-looking mould is

water on the floor. We mop it up. We even defrost the whole appliance but before
we know it, there's another puddle in its place. We call out the repair man. He
fiddles around but can't seem to get to the bottom of the problem. Perhaps it's time
to replace it with a radically different model that does the job we expect of it; the
delivery of safe, wholesome and appetising food.
