Minneapolis City Council Calls for GMO Labels (8/26/2000) Like the similar resolution
recently passed in Austin,
Texas, Minneapolis is
asking the federal
government to label GMOs
in foods. The non-binding
resolution doesn't have any
real legal impact; but it's a
decent indication of how
consumers feel. Or, as
councilman Niland said, ""It
really boils down to
people's right to know
what's on their store
shelves."
Lumen's Customers Come First (8/16/2000) Remember this spring
when Greg Caton at Lumen
Foods was the biotech
industry's poster child?
Mainstream farm press
articles screamed with
Caton's pro-biotech
pronouncements and
touted Lumen's pro-GMO
stance as proof that the
health food market would
switch to GMOs. It all
turned out to be a disaster
for the Louisiana-based soy
food company. Health food
makers are stronger than
ever in their desire to be
GMO-free. Lumen has
done an about face and
now sells non-GMO
products. A lot of
consumers don't want
biotech, a lesson that
Lumen says it "learned the
hard way". You have to
wonder if Lumen's "friends"
in the pro-biotech lobby are
helping bail the company
out now that they've
alienated a majot client
base.
ABC Feels OTC's Whip (8/14/2000) The Organic Trade
Association has ABC over a
barrell for their sloppy and
incorrect report on organic
agriculture. If OTC has its
way, 20/20 reporter John
Stossel may be pulling
weeds instead of filing
reports... and if you though
the Ophrah beef
disparagement case was
big, OTA is threatening one
to make that look small.
Not a good time to be
working for 20/20...
